About Concordia University of Edmonton
In 1921, the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod established Concordia College, the forerunner of today’s Concordia University—in Edmonton to train young men for careers as Christian ministers and educators. For a long time, it served as a high school in everything except name.
In 1939, it became the first high school in the country to admit both males and females and to provide a general education curriculum and a high school diploma. Concordia’s first-year university programs started in 1967 via a partnership with the University of Alberta. Beginning with the 1975 academic year, students may earn credit via affiliation for their second year of study.
In 1988, the university’s first students completed the three-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science programs; since then, the school has added a variety of other majors and four-year degree options. In 1994, high school and college (degree-granting) were split formally.
Mutual consent dissolved the relationship with the University of Alberta in 1991. Before 1987, Concordia College was a publically supported, denominationally affiliated college; that year, the province of Alberta granted Concordia permission to become an independent, degree-granting institution.
In 1995, Concordia College became Concordia University College of Alberta, changing its name from Concordia College. Concordia High School was founded in 2000 as a spinoff of the high school curriculum housed at Concordia since 1939. Until July 2011, the two schools occupied the same building.
The Alberta government decided in 2014 that Concordia may legally change its name to remove the term “college,” making it a university. As a result, the Concordia University of Edmonton was rebranded as Concordia University College of Alberta on May 1.
